Engineering businesses need to understand more than who is available today. They need a forward view of project demand, capacity, specialist skills and the trade-offs between competing commitments.

The challenge

Planning across projects and disciplines can become a collection of spreadsheets and informal decisions. Information exists, but it is difficult to maintain a consistent picture as work changes.

The application

We developed resource-planning software to bring demand, people and capabilities into one workflow. The application helps teams examine future capacity and make allocation decisions with more useful information.

The engineering problem

The hard part is modelling the real business constraints: skills aren’t interchangeable, work changes over time, and utilisation alone cannot tell you whether a plan is achievable.

What this illustrates

Software can capture operational knowledge and turn a labour-intensive planning process into a repeatable capability.
